Seasonal Allergies

Back to Homepage

Seasonal allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, describes a symptom complex in children who have become sensitized to wind-borne pollens of trees, grass, and weeds.

Symtpoms include sneezing, profuse and watery runny nose, nasal congestion, and itching of the nose/throat/roof of mouth and ears. Itching, redness and tearing of the eyes may also occur, causing severe discomfort in some cases. The child with allergies will often rub or wrinkle the nose, clear their throat habitually, have dark circles under the eyes, and have predominant mouth breathing. Fever is usually not present.

Treatment

  • Avoidance
    • If spring/summer brings about your childs symptoms, avoid playing outdoors, especially when the grass is being cut. Air conditioning can be of great benefit. Showering before bedtime may help cleanse the body of pollens at night.
  • Anti-histamines
    • Over-the-counter medications are useful to decrease the reaction your child has to these allergens.
    • Loratidine (under the brand names of Alavert, Claritin or generic) is a good, non-sedating medication for allergies
    • Benadryl is a good option, but is shorter acting and sedating. Follow the dosing guidelines on the product.
  • Decongestants
    • May help with symptoms of congestion, but are meant to be used for short term treatment only. It is generally recommended to avoid decongestant nasal sprays as it can actually make the problem worse in the long run.

If you have tried a few of the OTC products and find that your child has no relief of symptoms, call our office during regular business hours for an appointment with a provider.
