Flu - What Parents Need to Know!
Some important facts to remember:
- All of the influenza circulating in the community is H1N1 (swine) flu.
- The vast majority (>99%) of children with H1N1 influenza experience a mild illness.
- The greatest risk seems to come from secondary infections such as pneumonia.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever, occasionally high and often lasting for several days

- Cough, congestion
- Body aches and pains
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Fatigue
Children with these symptoms do not necessarily need to see their doctor! They can be cared for at home.
Treatment should include:
- Fluids
- Tylenol or motrin for fever and aches/pains
- Rest
- Stay home!
Warning signs (reasons to seek medical care):
- Very ill-looking child causing parental concern
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish skin color
- Signs of dehydration (not urinating, lethargic)
- Flu-like symptoms improve, then worsen with new fever and cough
- Fever with a rash
